February 22 - 23, 10am - 4pm        Yukari Hayashida        $190/$215

How to Make Three Photograph Albums
There are three basic approaches to album-making, defined by the page format: an extended accordion, a stack of single sheets, or a set of folded sections. By keeping our models small, we will make prototypes of three structures as we explore both the advantages and the limitations of a given style. Decisions are based on variables as diverse as the number of photos, the size of a sheet of paper, the availability of book-binding equipment, and the methods of mounting the photos on the book pages. We will fold, sew, glue - and do an awful lot of talking over these two days! Beginners welcome.
March 1 - 2, 10am - 4pm        Barbara Mauriello       $190/$215

Crossed-Structure and Secret Belgian Bindings
A two-day workshop to make models of these historic book structures. The Crossed-Structure binding resulted from Carmencho Arrugui's study of pre-16th century bindings. This variation was developed by Hedi Kyle and uses a heavy cover paper with paste paper patterns on both sides. This non-adhesive binding yields a soft cover book with a decorative pattern of crossing strips on the spine. The Secret Belgian binding is an historical binding which has been rediscovered by Hedi Kyle and has been attributed to the Belgians, though its origins are still obscure. This hard cover book will be made with decorated papers with a binding that yields a sturdy yet flexible book with an attractive pattern of threads on the spine.
March 1 - 2, 10am - 4pm        Emily Martin        $190/$215

Clamshell Boxes
Essential knowledge for all good bookbinders! Whether you're housing photographs, prints, antiquarian books or artists' books, the clamshell box is the perfect container. In this workshop, students will construct a two-tray, cloth-covered box to hold an 8.5" X 11" book or stack of prints or photographs. We will discuss the measuring of oddly shaped books and other materials. If time permits, we will discuss insetting labels and lettering boxes.
March 8 - 9, 10am - 4pm        Carolyn Chadwick       $190/$215

Caterpillar Stitch Bindings
We will begin by sewing onto a card to experience this sewing's multiple variations. It can be utilized for many structures including photo albums, scrapbooks and journals, as well as incorporating various folding forms for artist's books. The sewing works well with most papers and folios with various thicknesses. The sewing is developed through building up the core and packing the threads, which allows for a flexible slinky action of the spine and compensates for storage of photos, collage and other materials. You can also sew this stitch supported to enhance the spine thickness. Variations of board attachment and end sheet preparation will compliment this handsome book structure.
March 15 - 16, 10am - 4pm        Denise Carbone        $190/$215

More Beaded Bindings
The bead goes on! If you loved Beaded Bindings, this class is the perfect solution for your book and bead addiction. In More Beaded Bindings we will look at several new ways to incorporate beads into spines of books, as well as covers. We will also look at samples of beaded and embroidered books, as well as how artists are using beads and embroidery in their art today, often to create text! Please bring beads of all sizes to class. We will finish at least one book with a spine, more if time permits. Beaded Bindings, as well as previous bookbinding experience is helpful, but not essential.
March 15 - 16, 10am - 4pm        Miriam Schaer        $190/$215

Soft Cover Leather Bound Books
Bind books and be creative designing covers by using simple yet exciting techniques. Use hand-carved linoleum as well as found items to press into the leather, creating original works. Dye leather in the color of your choice. Decorative end sheets, a headband and your hand-dyed leather make this book your very own.
March 22 - 23, 10am - 4pm        Biruta Auna        $190/$215

From Cloth to Book
Do you have special fabric at home that you've always wanted to use for making books? No need to limit your book creations to commercially produced materials. In this workshop, participants will learn which fabrics are best for turning into book cloth, along with technical demonstrations of laminating and backing. You will also learn how to back decorative and thin papers for strength and durability. On the second day, we will make a single-section hardcover book using the backed materials.
March 22 - 23, 10am - 4pm        Laurel Parker        $190/$215

Two Books in a Box
These two small, chunky books - both based on historical models - are a celebration of the joys of sewing. The Tacket Binding and the Long Stitch Binding, sewn into paper cases, are defined by the links of colorful stitching parading up and down the spines of the books. The box is built to protect and to display both volumes in a single-family house. Beginners welcome.
March 29 - 30, 10am - 4pm        Barbara Mauriello       $190/$215

Headbands and Other Fixings
Binding involves diverse practices. These include embroidering headbands, twisting and braiding leather ties or straps and making fasteners such as toggles for closures. Ingredients such as spun linen and silk, strips of leather, vellum or twisted paper can be concocted into small wonders of ingenuity and craftsmanship. Students will stitch three to four different headbands on dummies and find numerous solutions for attractive closures, and will construct one book to which fixtures of your choice can then be applied. Previous experience in working headbands will make a difference but is not a requirement.
March 29 - 30, 10am - 4pm        Hedi Kyle        $190/$215

The Altered Book
We will investigate different construction methods by altering an existing book and/or using a found object to create a three dimensional narrative. The class explores non-traditional approaches to book making. Technical demonstrations will be given to assist us in the creative process. Bring some ideas to class since individual concepts play an important role in creating this unique book. All levels welcome.
Saturday, April 5, 10am - 4pm        Benjamin D. Rinehart        $90/$115

NEW! Taking After Hunter-Gatherer
The structure of the book we create in this workshop is designed to accommodate the need I had conceptually and visually when I produced an artist's book with this title. Waxed paper, dental floss, and stainless steel wire were combined with my intaglio prints and text to create the book. Most importantly, sturdy paper printed with images and texts are bound into the folds of waxed-paper concertina pleats which MOVE FREELY. Participants may want to bring prepared images or work with blank sheets of paper. Beginners welcome.
April 5 - 6, 10am - 4pm        Kumi Korf        $190/$215

Cut, Cover & Stitch II
Another for beginners! If you enjoyed the first session, you'll love the second. Learn to make four different handmade books in one weekend. We will fold, punch and sew three text blocks, each using a different cover variation. We will also learn to bend needles into the necessary shapes to sew these timeless books. No previous experience necessary.
April 12 - 13, 10am - 4pm        Susan Mills        $190/$215

Collage Technique
Explore the technical issues of adhesion through a practical investigation of grounds, proper ground and medium preparation, and experimentation of various grounds and adhesives in relation to specific adhered materials. Emphasis in this course is placed on permanency, technical problem- solving, continuity of materials (techniques to eliminate bleeding, warping, bubbling, smears, wrinkling, etc.), manipulating papers with different kinds of adhesives, and creating exciting, novel art materials with adhesives.
April 26 - 27, 10am - 4pm        Roy Secord        $190/$215

April 26 - 27, 10am - 4pm        Carolyn Chadwick        $190/$215

Miniature Books II
Miniature books are challenging due to their size limitations. There are no limitations however to their potential as vessels and artifacts for both visual and written expressions.
