How to Make A Photograph Album

By keeping our models small, we will make prototypes of as many structures as time allows, with each participant selecting their favorites from among the possibilities presented. There will be much discussion on both the advantages and limitations of a given style. Variables as diverse as the number of photos to be bound, the size of a sheet of paper, and the availability of bookbinding equipment in the home studio will lead students towards specific models. The goal is not to produce a single, large album, but rather to understand and to play with the principles of album-making. Please bring some (small!) photos with you on Saturday. Limp Vellum Binding
Limp vellum bindings for blank books were being produced as early as the 14th century. This structure was and still is used by artists¥ as notebooks and for small printed editions. It produces a sound sewing construction with a comfortable flexible cover. The text block is sewn onto strips of alum-tawed goatskin. The spine is lined with Japanese paper and then the endbands are sewn onto a secondary core of goatskin. The covers are constructed, and then the text block is laced through, creating a supple attachment. This style of book is popular as a conservation binding because it is not necessary to use adhesives. It is used with vellum as well as with paper. The sensation of holding a light portable vellum book, especially when it becomes worn with the patina of your hands, feels and looks better than your favorite pair of old jeans.November 15 - 16, 10am - 4pm Denise Carbone $220/$245 + materials fee Portfolio Workshop

We welcome all levels of experience-from none to lots-to join us in making uncommon boxes. Part of a book conservator's routine is to examine historical bindings in order to ascertain how they were made, of what materials, and why have they fallen apart. Students will explore examples of a wide variety of historic binding details and materials such as board materials, board attachment and lacing styles, endbands, clasps and closures, skins and other covering materials, bookmarks, sewing cards, etc. The instructor will also show slides that illustrate historical techniques, materials, and principles. You will make your own collection of samples of such features, but in the interest of doing new things, we will not be trying to complete entire bindings. We will also explore solutions that conservators sometimes use that may be useful for contemporary book art because they have very specific goals such as reversibility, avoidance of adhesives, or taking advantage of what a carefully chosen material alone can offer. No previous experience is required-just a love of techniques and materials.November 22 - 23, 10am - 4pm Pamela Spitzmueller $220/$245 Pop-Up Structures for Beginners
