Dear Friend,

Thanks to your continued support, our programs and classes are in full swing, and the Center thrives energetically. Your participation is essential to our ongoing success. Please help us continue this forward momentum by making a special tax-deductible contribution to the Center’s Annual Fund Appeal (aka the End of the Year Appeal). It has become increasingly urgent to request your generosity prior to the holiday season in order to balance our budget and to comply with foundation, corporate, and government funding requirements.

The Center was awarded increased funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, in addition to a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of New York, the first in over a decade. Support from government agencies demonstrates public trust of the Center. We were recently invited to submit grant proposals to several foundations, including the Andy Warhol Foundation which recently conducted a site visit and is currently reviewing our request for 2007 support, as are the Auchincloss, the Greenwall, and the Jerome foundations. It takes years to cultivate these relationships—we are making tremendous strides in diversifying our funding sources. You are key to these efforts through your individual donations that demonstrate a steady base of support.

We are offering exciting new classes and more advanced courses than ever before, such as Design Binding and Copperplate Calligraphy. Renowned conservator Gary Frost is teaching a Sally R. Bishop Faculty Fellowship Master Class in November. The Stein Family Scholarship, our various artist residencies, and literary programs—all focused on providing opportunities for artists and writers at a critical stage in their careers—continue to prosper and receive recognition from the arts community and foundations.

The Center’s exhibitions and publications programs are receiving critical attention and elevating the reputation of the Center in the international book arts scene. Our exhibitions have received a favorable review by Holland Cotter in the New York Times Art section, were chosen as a “must see” in a recent issue of Time Out New York, and featured in a radio spot on WQXR. Our major publication, Robert Bringhurst’s New World Suite Number Three has been acquired by important collections around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the State Library of Queensland in Australia, the Library of Congress, the Library and Archives Canada, and numerous other institutions and private collections.

Please help us continue these exciting and innovative programs by making a contribution to the Annual Fund Appeal! Our goal this year is $75,000. While support from foundations and government agencies is significant, donations from individuals make up the majority of our contribution income and serve as leverage to secure funding from corporations and foundations. Our co-op maintenance fees have increased 15%, as have the costs of utilities and course materials. Annual Fund contributions are separate from membership dues. Please give as much as you can—this time of year is our period of greatest need! Supporters of $100 or more will receive a limited edition letterpress printed item.

Please return the reply form below with your check or credit card number. You can also contribute online or by calling the Center directly at (212) 481-0295.
