Joyce Cutler -Shaw is an artist of drawings, public projects- centered on ecological issues? - and artists books. Her project, The Anatomy Lesson, in process since 1990, is an investigation of human identity and the evolving self, birth through death, being realized in her unusual role as Artist-In-Residence/Visiting Scholar at the School of Medicine of the University of California San Diego. Her Alphabet of Bones is an original calligraphy of 26 characters, inspired by the hollow bones of birds, and digitized and translated into the English alphabet and a symbolic code. This copyrighted typeface has been widely published and honored, including a 1992 publication prize from the Center for Book Arts for Three Cages, a folded book of images and text in English and The Alphabet of Bones. Her works are represented in international Museum and Library Special Collections, including the Albertina Museum in Vienna, The Wellcome Institute and Tate Museum Library in London, New York?s Museum of Modern Art and The 42nd Street Library, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and in California, the Athenaeum Music and Art Library, the Getty Library, and the University of California San Diego and Los Angeles.
