I realized the importance of book arts when I was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. Drawing, painting, and writing poetry about my health and nature were the only ways I could cope with life. As I learned new binding techniques, experimented with works on paper and expanded my visual vocabulary, the better I felt and the faster I healed. It was a lonely time for me: The only social settings I wanted to be in were book art and papermaking classes. After I recovered and saw all the books I had created, I realized I had healed one stitch at a time. And, nature and the environment had become just as important to me as my life. |
