Susan Martin MaffeiNYC, NY
Susan Martin Maffei is an internationally known tapestry artist . Her background includes art studies at The Art Students League in NYC, tapestry training at Les Gobelins in Paris, apprenticeship and commission work at the Scheuer Tapestry Studio, NYC and conservation of antique textiles at Artweave Gallery, NYC. She has been designing and weaving her work professionally since 1985. She has taught, lectured and exhibited in galleries, art centers, museums and universities in the U.S. and many countries abroad and has work in both public and private collections. She has maintained a professional studio in Manhattan for more than 25 years.
Her work depicts a very personal graphic view of the surrounding urban landscape. It is a marriage of mark making peculiar to tapestry weaving, coupled with the tactility and intensity of modern yarn and color. Selective memory, process and material combine to form this imagery, which can only exist as textile. Influenced by historical forms of the narrative, many works are related to the book arts by exploring the ancient scroll format, whether it be noting each move of an important chess match between Fisher and Petrosian or depicting both the NY and the NJ shores of the Hudson River.
